BNP claimed that they got permission from the police to hold a rally in front of its central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Saturday, demanding the release of incarcerated BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

However, the police said that they did not give any such permission and that the matter is still under consideration.

BNP Publicity Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie told Dhaka Tribune that they had received verbal permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Friday.

“I did receive a phone call from deputy commissioner of Ramna on Saturday and he told us that we can hold a rally on Saturday. He however also asked me to talk to Motijheel divisional police officials in this regard,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, a three-member BNP delegation led by Annie met with the DMP commissioner seeking permission for the rally which is expected to begin at 2 pm in front of its Naya Paltan Office.

When contacted, DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said: “We didn’t give any permission, but the matter is under consideration.”

He went on saying: "I will sit with my officers tomorrow (Saturday) to mark DMP’s founding anniversary. I am still unsure of how much security our members will be able to provide to them (BNP).

“The decision will be finalised tomorrow morning,” he concluded.

On February 8, 2018, Khaleda was sent to Old Dhaka Central Jail after a lower court sentenced her to five years of imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The High Court later doubled her five-year jail term.

Khaleda was found guilty in another corruption case the same year, though her party claims both cases are politically motivated.

The BNP chief has been receiving treatment at BSMMU since April 1.

Khaleda is now facing around 36 cases, including the ones related corruption in Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust.

BNP has announced a two-day program for their Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release. As part of the two days programs, the party arranged doa mahfils in mosques after Jummah prayers on Friday seeking early recovery of Khaleda as she has been suffering from various critical ailments.

Besides, BNP will hold a rally in front of its Nayapaltan central office at 2pm on Saturday.  All district units of the party will also stage demonstrations on the same day.
