Poppy seeds worth Tk 30cr recovered at Mongla Port

Banned Poppy seeds worth around Tk 30 crore were seized at Mongla Port in Bagerhat district on Thursday.

 

Being tipped-off, customs authorities seized the poppy seeds from container yard number 2 at the port in the afternoon.

 

According to Mongla Customs sources, M/s Taj Traders of Dhaka's Sowari Ghat and Ayesha Traders of Chawk Bazar imported the poppy seed by four containers, in the name of importing footballs, tennis balls and snow-sprays etc.

 

Each of the containers was supposed to carry goods weighing five tons. As it carried poppy seeds, it weighed 17-20 tons each.

Suspecting the matter, the customs authority opened the containers and noticed the matter.

 

Mongla Customs House Joint Commissioner Md Samsul Arefin Khan said the importers were asked to remain present while opening the containers, but they remained absent during the opening of containers.
